Students of MI: Tyler

“Even after years in New York City, Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo will always be home to me—the memories, the friendships and the connections I made there will stay with me forever.

I would 100% not be where I am today without going to WMU.

From day one, I knew I wanted to work on Broadway—but wasn’t sure how I was going to make that happen.

After receiving my first internship offer all the way in New York, I immediately started to work with WMU faculty and staff to map out how I could pursue this internship while also continuing my course work at the University.

Both financially and credit wise, WMU was there for me throughout the entire internship process and allowed me the freedom to really focus on my work in NYC.

The university, and the WMU Department of Theatre, really played an instrumental role in my off-campus experience and overall success. Western Michigan University not only helped financially, but theatre professor Joan Herrington, also created a custom online curriculum, allowing me to work on Broadway, leverage numerous internship credits and follow my dreams with personalized syllabi and coursework.

By allowing me to accept this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and working with me individually to create a program, Western Michigan truly allowed me to excel in this field. I have now worked on shows like “Hamilton,” “If/Then” and “Living on Love” and am now the Assistant Company Manager for “Wicked” on Broadway.

The education that was provided to me, both in the Department of Theatre and in general education courses, was top-notch and has directly impacted my performance in the workplace. It’s truly a special place.” Every person who asks me where they should go, Western is always number one on the list.”
