Students of MI: Joe

“I decided to come to Northern Michigan University because I truly felt connected to the school. After coming up for different activities throughout high school, I had a good feeling about NMU, and I followed that feeling. I also knew NMU could provide opportunities in the field of education that no other school on my list could.

I love feeling that every day I get closer to being able to change the world for the better in the classroom. Almost everything I do in my college career will contribute to that. Furthermore, the faculty of the mathematics and computer science department is spectacular. It is a wonderful feeling to dive deeper into the field of math with some incredible professors knowing that someday I will be able to share the same feeling with students of my own.

Near the beginning of my career at NMU, I took advantage of a special opportunity to become a teaching assistant for a math class. I instantly fell in love with it. Last semester, I began as an official TA, working with two beginning algebra classes. That opportunity has been a perfect way to gain experience in my desired field.

On campus, I am involved with NMU Math Lab, Cedar Hall government, Education Club, marching band, pep band, Honors Student organization, Catholic Campus Ministry and Quizbowl. Marching band is definitely the most rewarding activity that I am involved in because it adds a ton of spirit to the games. It is a fun way to continue playing my instrument without a great deal of commitment. I have made lifelong friendships in that group that I would not have made anywhere else.

College Is what you make of it and you get what you put in. Let that drive you during your time in school.”
