Students of MI: Pedro

“I’m a fifth year marketing major with a double minor in graphic design and communications. I’m applying to grad schools right now to pursue higher education and student affairs.

I decided to live on campus because I wanted that challenge for myself. I wanted that sense of independence, and I think I really got that. Every year, I’ve acquired more skills and I’m thankful for that. Now I can share these skills with other students that I’ve met going through their first year and experiencing change in their lives. I really value and appreciate that I had the opportunity to stay on campus.

I was unsure about college because I’m a first-generation student. Everything was new to me and my family, and we were very confused. But I immediately knew SVSU was the first place I felt connected and felt a sense of community for myself. When I was able to tour the campus – I knew it was the place for me.

I think I have a good range of involvement in all kinds of organizations. National Society of Leadership and Success, Latino Awareness Association, Student Association Board, National Residence Hall Honorary and everything in between. This really helped me become who I am today and made me realize what I want to do. These organizations can tilt the needle in a different direction than you were initially.

The reason I stuck with the Residence Housing Association (RHA) is because of the opportunities that are provided to grow, including going to conferences within the region and nation. It’s further developed my networking skills, communication skills and professional development overall.

I don’t know if this is just an SVSU thing, or a college thing in general, but there are so many people willing to learn and empower each other, and build a community with one another.”
